Holguin, the city of parks

Holguin is one of the most beautiful cities in Cuba, located in the northern part of the east of the island, with a population of more than one million inhabitants. It is the third largest province in the country, with an area of 9,300.6 km².

The place where the capital city of the province sits today, then the Holguín herd, was founded by the Spanish soldier Francisco García de Holguín on April 4, 1545 together with his wife and an entourage of 50 to 80 people and under the religious invocation of San Isidoro, hence from very early on it was known as the Hato de San Isidoro de Holguín.

Its best-known building is La Periquera, the former Town Hall, which acquired its name from the colorful uniform of the Spanish soldiers who guarded it, which is currently a museum.

The weather is very nice during all year, so you can choose any date to visit this wonderful city, but I would recommend the months between April and August. There are many celebrations during this period of time, for example ¨Las Romerias de Mayo¨, which is celebrated every year from May 2 to 8, tradition and modernity are combined to convert the city of Holguín into the Capital of Young Art and the World Festival of Artistic Youth. In these, a sample of the most representative of national and international culture is presented.

The best way to get to the city is by taking a flight directly to it, unless you are in a nearby province and you can just take a bus.

Holguin is a very atractive city for tourists, due its beautiful beaches, so if you decide to come here these places cannot be out of your list:

1- Guardalavaca beach

2- Playa Pesquero

3- Playa Esmeralda

4- Cayo Saetia Island

Here you can see some pictures of this wonderful places.

But we cannot let the city behind, here I’m going to give a brief list of places you can go:

1- Hill of the cross

2- Calixto Garcia park

3- Julio Grave de Peralta Park

4- Marqueta Square

5- Cathedral of San Isidoro

6- San Jose Church And if you want to hang out at night you can have a wonderful night at Nocturno Club.

A place to stay will not be difficult to find, because throughout the city you will find rooms for rent and hotels. You can use the local transportation to get around the city, like buses, taxis… but you can even do it on foot, since it is not a very big city. Also, there are many restaurants where you can taste the cuban tradional food, like: Ropa Vieja (Old Clothes) … Arroz y Frijoles Negros (Rice and Black Beans) … Arroz Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christian Rice) … Lechon Asado (Roast Pork) … Yuca con Mojo (Yucca con Mojo Salsa) …and more.
